Climb in the spectacular Ecrins National Park, one of the largest, wildest and most dramatic mountain ranges in France and bag a 4000m summit!

This is a mountaineering trip geared to preparing you for a successful climb of the Dome des Ecrins 4015m (mountaineering grade: Facile / Easy) in the limited time of a long weekend!

The trip includes a day of glacier and mountaineering skills training and an acclimatisation climb of Pic du Glacier d’Arsine 3364m (mountaineering grade: Facile / Easy) before tackling the Dome des Ecrins.

The Dome des Ecrins 4015m is one of the highest summits in the Ecrins National Park, just behind the Barre des Ecrins 4102m. A serious summit with large crevassed glacier crossing. The Dome des Ecrins is a majestic mountain and one on many mountaineers bucket lists. 

Meeting Place: You will meet your guide at the car park at Pre de Madame Carle on the morning of the first day. He will be in touch with you before hand to confirm times.

Rules:

Some experience of a high mountain environment, using crampons and ice axes and mountaineering techniques is required.

What to Wear

Wicking layers appropriate to the weather with extra warm layers for higher altitudes, crampon compatible mountaineering boots, stretch fabric mountaineering trousers and jacket.

What to Bring

Mountaineering rucksack, head torch, duvet jacket, fleece gloves, buff, warm hat, waterproofs, basic toiletries, spare underwear, sleeping bag liner, personal first aid kit, snacks and bars, water bottle.

Equipment Provided

Helmet, harness, crampons, ice axe (you can bring your own personal gear if you prefer), ropes and safety equipment for mountaineering.

Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1: Glacier Skills

Pré de Madame Carle is the starting point for this trip and we aim to set off in the morning from here.

Starting altitude: 1874m
Summit altitude: 2542m
Ascent: 668m
Average climbing time: 2 1/2 hours plus a few hours to practice skills on the glacier.

A relatively straight forward walk in to the glacier. Once on the glacier you will rope up and go over basic crampon techniques, moving together on a rope,  how to use an ice axe effectively, as well as also learn how to recognise dangers and look after your fellow mountaineers and yourself whilst climbing.

Night in Refuge du Glacier Blanc (half board)

Day 2: Pic du Glacier d’Arsines (3364m)

A beautiful mixed route mainly on snow with some rock scrambling and easy climbing.

Starting altitude: 2542m
Summit altitude: 3364m
Ascent: 820m
Average climbing time: 3.5 hours

With an early alpine start at around 4 am, you will join the path towards the refuge des Ecrins.

Upon reaching the snowy couloir you will rope up and start your climb to the ridge where there is a bit of scrambling to reach the summit.

Stunning views of the Ecrins massif including la Meije, Pelvoux, and the Glacier Blanc and Glacier Noir will reward your efforts!

Once down, you will then make your way to the Refuge des Ecrins (3175m) which is further up the valley.

Night in Refuge des Ecrins (half board)

Day 3: Dome des Ecrins 4015m

The dramatic ridge of the Barre des Ecrins and it’s little sister, the Dome des Ecrins 4015m, can be seen from the refuge.

Starting altitude: 3175m
Summit altitude: 4015m
Ascent: 840m
Descent: 2230m
Average climbing time: 3 – 4 hours ascent and 2 – 3 hours descent (to Refuge des Ecrins) and 1.5 hours to reach Pré de Madame Carle.

After another early alpine start you will make your way down from the refuge to the glacier. Here you put your crampons on and rope up and you’re ready for the off.

After reaching the Col des Ecrins at 3,300m via the edge of Glacier Blanc, your guide will pick a route that goes up through the huge snow slope, weaving your way up through the crevasses and under the dramatic seracs. You’ll arrive at a natural col that then leads to the summit of the Dome.

You will then make your way back down to Pré de Madame Carle, arriving exhausted but very happy!
